Ideology: Centrist nationalist
History:
The Bloc populaire was founded in 1942 by the leaders of the Ligue pour la défense du Canada (League for the Defense of Canada), an anticonscriptionist association created during the 1942 referendum campaign on conscription. It's parliamentary leaders were Maxime Raymond in the House of Commons and André Laurendeau in the Legislative Assembly of Quebec. This party had a great success during the 1944 general elections, but slowly declined after the 1945 federal general elections and scuppered itself after Laurendeau resigned as provincial leader in July 1947.
