The Parti indépendantiste (Independentist Party) was founded in 1985 by orthodox sovereigntists which rejected the policy considered too much moderated by the Parti québécois concerning Quebec's accession to sovereignty, notably following the "beau risque" of René Lévesque in 1984 and the election of Pierre Marc Johnson as leader of the PQ in 1985. It advocated for the independence of Quebec without economic association with the rest of Canada, contrary to the project of "sovereignty-association" included in the program of the PQ since its creation.
The Parti indépendantiste dissolved itself in 1990 following the dismissal of its leader, Gilles Rhéaume, in January. Most of its leaders afterward adhered to the Parti québécois.
