History:
The origins of the Parti conservateur in Canada lies as far as 1854, when two right wing parties of the Province of Canada, the Conservatives of John A. MacDonald (Upper-Canada) and the Bleus of George-?‰tienne Cartier (Lower-Canada) formed a "Liberal-Conservative" coalition. From this coalition was born a political party, which still exists today on the federal stage.
The Parti conservateur was the major party in Quebec from 1867 to 1897, when the last conservative prime minister in Quebec, Edmund James Flynn, lost his office. Then, in 1935, after a 37 years domination of the Liberal Party in Quebec, the Parti conservateur, then led by Maurice Duplessis, merged with the Action libérale nationale (ALN: National Liberal Action) and became the Union nationale (UN: National Union). This coalition became formally a political party in 1936.
