History

The Parti national is a coalition of moderates from the Liberal Party and the Conservative Party to promote and defend the interests of French Canadians, at the federal level as well as in Quebec, beyond partisan interests. It was born for the first time in 1872, at the federal level, with Honoré Mercier as leader. Because of the fact that the first National Party was composed almost exclusively of former Liberals, it has been quickly absorbed by the Liberal Party after the 1872 and 1874 federal elections.

The second rehash of the National Party appeared as a reaction against Louis Riel's hanging in November 1885. Therefore, on November 22, during the "assemblée du Champ de Mars" (Champ de Mars assembly) in Montreal, Honoré Mercier called for the creation of a "Parti national". After winning the 1886 general election, Mercier was sworn Prime Minister of Quebec, heading a cabinet made of Liberals and National Conservatives. However, the "Parti national" label was to be quickly given up, and Mercier and his incumbents did run for office as "Liberals" during the 1890 general election.
