The Parti communiste du Québec (COM) arises from the Communist Party of Canada, founded in 1921. As early as 1923, the communist activist Albert Saint-Martin tried in vain of to make recognize by the Communist International an autonomous French-Canadian Communist Party, Moscow not recognizing to the French-Canadians the right of association outside of the Canadian Communist Party. This orientation was abandoned in 1929, the IC realizing its error and asking to the Communist Party of Canada to get better organized within the French-speaking proletariat.
The Parti communiste was known under the name of Parti ouvrier-progressiste (Labour-Progressive Party) from 1941 to 1959, following its banishment by the federal authorities. In 1965, the Parti communiste du Québec was definitively constituted in political party under the Quebec laws, under Samuel Walsh's presidency.
In 2002, the Parti communiste du Québec merged with the Parti de la démocratie socialiste (PDS: Socialist Democracy Party; ex-NPD-Québec), the Rassemblement pour l’alternative progressiste (RAP: Rally for the Progressive Alternative) and the Quebec branch of Socialism International to form the Union des forces progressistes (UFP: Union of Progressive Forces). The UFP merged in his turn with the political movement Option citoyenne in 2006 to form the Québec solidaire (QS: United Quebec) party. The Parti communiste du Québec constituted nevertheless, until 2005, the Quebecois branch of the Communist Party of Canada, a schism having arisen between both entities on the national question in May, 2005.
This schism incited the authorities of the ex-Parti communiste du Québec to make it granted again the status of authorized political party to protect their rights on the name of the party. In spite of the refondation of the Parti communiste du Québec on paper, the leaders of the party indicated their intention not to run candidates during elections, to prefer backing the Québec solidaire candidates.
