Union des forces progressistes

The Union des forces progressistes have been founded in a convention held in Montreal on June 15-16, 2002. It is born of the merger of four political organizations:

  1. The Parti de la démocratie socialiste (PDS: Socialist Democracy Party; formerly known as the New Democratic Party of Quebec), founded in the middle of the 60s, itself born of the Parti social-démocratique (Quebec branch of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation).
  2. The Rassemblement pour l?alternative progressiste (RAP: Rally for the Progressive Alternative), founded in 1996 (became formally a political party in 2000).
  3. The Parti communiste du Québec (COM: Communist Party of Quebec), founded in 1965.
  4. The Quebec branch of Socialism International, an organization of trotskist tendency.

The objective of the UFP is to gather all the forces progressists of the left of the political spectrum, from social democracy to Communism while passing by socialism.

On February 5, 2006, a merger occured with a leftist political movement, Option citoyenne, in order to found a new political party: Québec solidaire (QS: United Quebec).
