The Nouveau Parti démocratique du Québec (NPD: New Democratic Party of Quebec) was founded on June, 1963. It arises from the New Democratic Party of Canada, founded in 1961, but the previous history of which go back up to the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation, founded in 1932 during the Regina Convention.
Following a schism on the question of the Quebec self-determination during its founding convention in June, 1963, the NPD-Québec decided to concentrate its efforts on the federal scene, letting the Parti socialiste du Québec (1963-1968) work on the Quebec scene. Following the disappearance of the Parti socialiste du Québec in 1968, the NPD-Québec presented nevertheless candidates for the National Assembly during the general elections of 1970 and 1976 (within the framework of a coalition with the Regroupement des militants syndicaux).
The New democratic Party of Quebec returned on the Quebec scene in 1985. In 1989, it withdrew of the federal NDP, this last one refusing to recognize in its statutes the right of Quebec for self-determination. Afterward, in 1995, the party changed name and became the Parti de la démocratie socialiste (PDS: Socialist Democracy Party).
In 2002, the Parti de la démocratie socialiste merged with the Rassemblement pour l?alternative progressiste (RAP: Rally for the Progressive Alternative), the Parti communiste du Québec (COM: Communist Party of Quebec) and the Quebec branch of Socialism Internationalto form the Union des forces progressistes (UFP: Union of Progressive Forces). The UFP merged in his turn with the political movement Option citoyenne in 2006 to form the Québec solidaire (QS: United Quebec) party.
One should not confuse the NPD-Québec with the New Democratic Party of Canada (Quebec section), founded following the split of the NPD-Québec from the federal NDP in 1991.
