Ideology: Socialist left
The terms "Ouvrier» (Labour) or «Parti ouvrier» (Labour Party) indicate several political organisations having presented candidates during elections in Quebec, from the end of the 19th century to the middle of the 20th century.
The first candidates to make campaign under the «Ouvrier» label, stemming from the labour union, appeared during the general election of 1886. However, it was in 1899 when the Parti ouvrier (Labour Party) made its appearance in Quebec, in activists' initiative of the Conseil des métiers et du travail de Montréal, among which Joseph-Alphonse Rodier and Albert Saint-Martin. Collecting activists of several political left parties on the federal stage (Parti socialiste du Canada, Parti social-démocrate du Canada, Parti communiste du Canada), it gained some modest electoral successes during general and municipal elections during the next two decades.
Affiliated to the «Parti ouvrier du Canada» (Labour Party of Canada) or «Parti ouvrier canadien» (Canadian Labour Party) from 1917, the Parti ouvrier will weaken gradually during the 20s. This decline is attributable notably in the loss of supports on its left, following the creation of the Communist Party in 1921, as well as from its right, the trade-unions of the Conseil des Métiers et du Travail de Montréal, considering it «too socialist», removing their support for the Parti ouvrier in 1925. It will disappear in any practical purposes during the Economic crisis of the 30s. The Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) will succeed it in 1932.
Another labour political organisation, the «Parti ouvrier canadien» (Canadian Labour Party), appeared in the political landscape during the 50s. The party presented candidates during the general election of 1956.
