The Parti québécois is born of the merger of three political parties advocating for independence:
The MSA and the RN merged on October 1968 as the Parti Québécois. After the merger, the RIN scuppered itself during a special convention held two weeks later, while incitating it's adherents of join PQ on an individual basis.
