Parti québécois

The Parti québécois is born of the merger of three political parties advocating for independence:

  1. The Mouvement souveraineté-association (MSA: Sovereignty-Association Movement), founded in 1967 by former Liberals led by René Lévesque.
  2. The Ralliement national (RN: National Rally), led by Gilles Grégoire, founded en 1965.
  3. The Rassemblement pour l'indépendance nationale (RIN: Rally for National Independence), led by Pierre Bourgeault, founded in 1960.

Parti québécois, 1985The MSA and the RN merged on October 1968 as the Parti Québécois. After the merger, the RIN scuppered itself during a special convention held two weeks later, while incitating it's adherents of join PQ on an individual basis.
