In a decision returned by the Commission de la représentation électorale du Québec (Committee of the electoral representation of Quebec) on June 12, 1992 concerning the demarcation of ridings, the Mercier riding is described as follows:
"La circonscription de Mercier comprend une partie de la ville de Montréal délimitée comme suit: la voie ferrée du Canadien Pacifique, la rue Rachel, l'avenue de l'Esplanade, la rue Fairmount, l'avenue de l'Esplanade et son prolongement." (The Mercier riding includes a part of the city of Montreal bounded as follows: the Canadian Pacific railroad, the rue Rachel, the avenue de l'Esplanade, the rue Fairmount, the avenue de l'Esplanade and its continuation.)

The Mercier riding is situated in the east of Montréal and includes the main part of the Plateau-Mont-Royal. It is surrounded by Sainte-Marie-Saint-Jacques in the southeast, Westmount-Saint-Louis in the south, Outremont in the southwest, Gouin in the northwest and Rosemont in the north.
